NAUTILIS SHELL PENDANT
This is a sea harvested nautilis shell set in silver and ready to wear as a pendant. The face of the shell is left natural and the body of the shell is filled with a dyed resin. This is then exposed so you can see the internal spirals which gives it a stunning elegant appearance.
Weight 71.56 cts app
Size 64 x 37 x 11 mm app
Note this SILVER is not the usual 925 quality. This silver has had nickle added to it and it is plated very thin but it still gives a very attractive look.
The Nautilus,, is the best-known species of nautilus. The shell, when cut away reveals a lining of lustrous nacre and displays a nearly perfect spiral. The shell exhibits counter shading, being light on the bottom and dark on top. This is to help avoid predators because when seen from above, it blends in with the darkness of the sea, and when seen from below, it blends in with the light coming from above. Nautilus shells were popular items in the Renaissance period and were often mounted by jewellers on a thin stem to make extravagant nautilus shell cups, mainly intended as decorations rather than for use. Small natural history collections were common in mid-19th century Victorian homes, and chambered nautilus shells were popular decorations.
